Dogs vs Digital Security

In the contest between cold circuitry (digital security) and man’s best friend (your dog), it seems the winner would be obvious.

And, if we’re talking about the best pet for playing fetch or retrieving the newspaper, the living, breathing dog is going to win just about every time, it’s true.

On the other hand, when it comes to deciding between man-made technology and a canine companion for the best way to keep your home safe, the decision is a bit harder to make.

Now, let’s be clear here. We’re not comparing a dog to one of those creepy robot police dogs you see on the news, nor to those cute robo-puppy playthings you might find in the toy aisle.

No, this is a contest between an actual dog and a digital home security system.

Each has its benefits and its detractions. What might be best for one home may not be for another.

So, here’s the breakdown between digital security and a dutiful dog:

  • A dog can be quite a useful companion around the house, even when it comes to security purposes.
  • Well-trained, a dog can patrol your property and keep an eye out for any encroaching dangers. Even if they’re just in the house, their instincts make them quicker to wake should something unusual intrude, and they’re likely to bark at anything that draws their ire, such as a pesky home invader.
  • On the other hand, a dog can be just as fallible as a person in some circumstances. Training a dog for security is an expensive process — and that’s on top of the usual costs of keeping a family pet, from food to vet appointments to basic care.

Untrained, some dogs are still natural at keeping an eye on the home. Others… are not. They might be too friendly, ready to approach any strange person who enters the house illicitly with nothing more than a friendly lick. They might be too aggressive, barking at anything that catches their attention, including the shadow of a squirrel outside, waking you for no reason. And some dogs may just be slugabeds, just as inclined to sleep through a quiet break-in as you are.

Not to mention some people are allergic to dogs, which is unlikely to come up with a security system made of silicon computer chips.

A digital security system, such as the DIY set-up you can get through BlueAccess, has few of those issues. It’s always on and alert, day and night. It’s also far less fallible, unlikely to go off for any reason other than someone entering without warning.

Combined with a set-up of cameras, motion detectors and other security accessories from BlueAccess, you can create a network of interconnected tools that will keep an eye on you and your property at all times, in a way no dog can manage.

On the other hand, no matter how sophisticated BlueAccess technology can be, it cannot accompany you to the park to catch a frisbee or cuddle up with you on the couch, so there are some trade-offs involved.

One can, of course, have both a dog and a digital security system, but it’s best to know what each is best at. BlueAccess will keep your home safe, Fido will keep your home a place of love. And there’s no contest there.
