How many security cameras do I need outside my house?

So you’re installing a security system and one of the first things you want to make sure you’ve got included in your home package is a good spread of cameras.

There’s just one issue. How many do you need? Just one at the front of the house? One per door? One per side of the house? One for every single access point to the home, even that small mouse hole by the crawlspace the cat keeps chasing squirrels into?

That last one might be a bit of overkill, yes. But you’re likely going to want more than one just for full peace of mind.

There’s no definitive answer on what the right number of cameras for your home will be.

There are a lot of variables to consider, including how many entryways your home has, how large your home is and what feels most comfortable for you.

But there are a few guidelines to give you a headstart on deciding your own magic number for camera placement.

  • Start at the front. You always want to know who’s trying to come in, so get a doorbell camera to keep an eye on the main entrance, whether it’s a welcome guest, the pizza delivery guy or one of those annoying door to door salesmen… or, perhaps, something a bit worse.
  • Make sure you cover all the most suspect angles. You may not want a camera above every window, but making sure you’ve got that dark side of the backyard well surveyed is probably a priority.
  • If there’s a doorknob on it, film it. You might only put a doorbell camera on the front, but any door that leads directly into the house should be under surveillance. These are the first places someone might try to break in, so make sure you capture it on a camera should the worst happen.
  • Include as many cameras as you feel you need. Ultimately, no one can decide how comfortable you will feel based on your home camera placement. For some people, two or three will do it. Others will want cameras in numerous places so they have a full panorama view of their property available at will. Play around with your system and its camera placement until you have what you feel is the exact right set-up.

Cameras are a vital tool in any home security system. Not only do they give you a bird’s eye view from whatever nook or cranny you place it in, they can discourage would-be burglars just by being visible and reminding a potential home intruder that someone is watching them.

Only you can decide how many cameras that will take for your particular home.
