A guide to naming your home security sensors

Naming your home security sensors early and correctly will make your network stronger

Why, you might wonder, is it necessary to name the home security sensors that make up portions of your home security system? After all, they’re identical, anonymous devices, which mean it makes no difference where one is placed. You’re not going to be calling them by name like you would a pet, expecting it to come to you on command.

Yet its the very identical nature of the devices that necessitates naming them, as labeling each sensor so it corresponds with where you plan to place it will help you better organize and deploy your home security system to best protect your home.

BlueAccess allows you to name components in your home security system, and do so before they are shipped. (This feature is available at checkout after you have one of our DIY bundles in your cart)

As you checkout online, you’ll be prompted to name each item in your bundle, allowing for easy identification of where you want to install each item once it arrives. BlueAccess will label each item accordingly, so that you can take one glance at a component and know exactly where you want it to go before you’ve even opened the box. This actually speeds up your installation process quite a bit.

What you choose to name your sensors is as important as where you plan to put them.

In fact, in most cases, the two choices should be the same. Don’t bother with clever or obscure titles. Just go with the obvious…

  • That camera you plan to plant just above the living room window?
    • Name it “Living Room Window.”
  • The one by little Suzie’s upper window, where the tree branches reach out?
    • Suzie.”
  • The camera at the backdoor that faces the dark alley?
    • “Back door.” Simple and obvious.

When the time comes, you’ll have that name listed with the security system component and know exactly where you want to put it once you are ready to install.

There’s no reason to name them cute or referential designations. Sure, it might be fun to name each sensor after your favorite killer AI in the movies, or maybe after every member of your Oregon Trail party, but for identification purposes these names will fall flat.

If you complete the package customizer at checkout, the names come pre-programmed. Therefore, when you’re checking each camera angle from your security console, they’ll be properly identified on screen. Because your display will will literally say the product name where you can easily see it (ie. Attic), it’ll make quick observation a breeze.

By combining these easy steps before you’re even done checking out, BlueAccess strips out several steps in the installation process before you’re even started, making it easier on you in multiple ways.

BlueAccess makes the process of installing your home security system as simple as possible, with a bit of help from your own input, and naming your sensors is just one example of that.
