Do I need cameras for my house?

So you know you want a home security system. Now it’s time to assemble all the parts. You’ve got a home alarm. You grabbed some security lights. Maybe you added a motion detector or two. You already feel more secure just from adding these elements to your overall house safety package. But now comes the next question.

What about security cameras?

Most home security networks you’ve seen include a camera or two, at least. Those doorbell cameras are increasingly popular, you know. And having one or two in notable corners is common. Still, you waver.

Do you REALLY need cameras, you ask yourself? Adding a few cameras will just mean more parts to install and keep up with once the network is up and running. Isn’t what I’ve got enough, already? What benefit do the cameras even offer?

Well, each homeowner must find their own answer to this issue, but there are clearly strong benefits to adding cameras to your home security system.

Cameras can, in fact, be invaluable tools in keeping your home safe, both before and after a potential home invasion.

Here are just a few reasons why adding cameras to your home security set-up is a great idea.

  • Cameras keep a record of what’s going on around your house. If you suffer a break-in, going over your camera footage might find suspicious people who were lurking around before the incident happened.
  • They can help catch a thief. If a home invader is caught on film, you can turn that footage over to the police, making an arrest much more likely than it might be without some sort of positive identification.
  • They can discourage home invasions before they ever happen. If your cameras are placed in a way they can be seen, many would-be burglars will seek easier prey rather than risk robbing a house where they’ll be recorded in the midst of the deed. Without doing anything at all, the camera scares away many prospective thieves.
  • They can, via all of those benefits, provide you with peace of mind. Knowing the cameras are up and running, you can rest easy knowing your home is under observation in the case of the worst happening, meaning you can spend less time worrying about your home and more time focusing on other things.

Cameras come with their own set of concerns:

  • Where to place them?
  • How many to include in your system?
  • What to name them?

But these are all questions you can address with ease once you’re officially decided to take the plunge and include them in your home security network.

Nothing strengthens the web of protection around your home than a solid spread of cameras to give full coverage of every inch of your property. In the best of circumstances, you won’t need the cameras and they’ll just be one additional part of the system. In the worst of circumstances, you’ll be happy to have them to give you all the benefits of having the cameras as part of your system.
